Commercial negotiation can be unfamiliar, even uncomfortable for some academic founders. But the ability to communicate confidently and effectively with technical teams and senior managers alike is essential. Often it’s as much about what isn’t said as what is and picking up on the more subtle non-verbal cues takes time to learn.

As trained scientists with several decades of business development experience, including technology start-ups, we usually ‘get’ the technology and its underlying science pretty quickly. But we can also see things from a commercial perspective and are able to translate between the often surprisingly different languages used within the science and business communities.
